This article is part of the “Champions of Global Goals Series” where YourCause employees share their connection to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Eric Ratner holding SDG #4 Quality EducationStatistics tell us that 57 million children worldwide remain out of school. 57 million! That’s equivalent to 2/3rds of all children in the US. Or for you football-crazed, enough to fill the Dallas Cowboy’s massive stadium 570 times (everything truly is bigger in Texas)! The majority of these children live in impoverished, conflict-afflicted areas and lack the fundamental resources necessary to obtain a quality education, resulting in a continued generational cycle.

Chances are if you are reading this you grew up in a similar situation to myself- started school around age 4, graduated high school and college, and now work in a full-time role. But imagine if this upbringing was not the case – where would you be now?

Having a quality education not only represents, in many cases, an avenue towards future jobs and success but more broadly, it is something that allows us to develop as worldly and aware human beings. Schooling provides both the practical knowledge and social skills that give it value beyond the grade marks and graduations we often celebrate.

So having acknowledged the severity of this problem, what can you, as an individual or company, do to help? Thankfully, there are plenty of charitable organizations right in our own backyards, both locally and internationally, that help provide the necessary resources to children all around the world.

Get Involved in Creating Quality Education

Here are some of the top education-based organizations supported by our clients that take steps to solve this global issue:

Save the Children – Having already reached 38,000 American children through early education programs, this organization is constantly pushing the envelope through teacher training, literacy programs, and exposure to the arts. Donation can expand these efforts to children both here in America and abroad.

Action in Africa – With more than half of the world’s out-of-school children located in sub-Saharan Africa, this region is clearly one that needs to be addressed. Action in Africa, most specifically targeted at Uganda, supports these children through a unique program that allows donors to support individual children in their studies.

Citizen Schools – Citizen Schools acts on their mission of ‘helping all children discover and achieve their dreams’ by providing ample giving and volunteering opportunities alike to help children in low-income communities. Their 32 school partnerships in states around the country have a personal impact on 5,300+ students each year.
